Bike3000 Healthy Living Tour Has Begun!
We have been biking for four days. Already we have seen and discovered some really cool things. The journey began in Virginia Beach, where we stayed with our friend from Merrowvista, Hilary Hines. She now works for a really awesome organization called Operation Smile.
Next we set off towards Suffolk, VA. First we made a pit stop just outside Virginia Beach at a Performance bike shop where we met some pretty rad dudes who were happy to sell us a handlebar bag and give us some advice about the trip. We soon found ourselves in South Norfolk, outside of a beautiful library.
As Merrowvista alums we believe that to live a positive healthy life requires balance in all four folds (mental, physical, social, and religious). So we would like to include the Norfolk Public Library: Horace C Downing Branch as part of our tour. Libraries are obviously great for strengthening your Mental Fold, but this library appear to be doing much more than that for the people of Southern Norfolk. As we wandered in and out to fill up water we spoke with many of the people using the library. We learned that it has only been there about a year and that it also organizes many events for the community. One lady said, "Many people come in and don't even pick up a book, they just sit by the fireplace." It seems that this addition to the neighborhood is serving the community as a safe, positive, healthy place to hang out.
After admiring the library for about an hour we soon found that we needed to reroute our day a little because the campsite we planned to go to was closed to tenters, so we headed to Chesapeake Campground instead. The campground had ponys and various other farm animals. Also because of this change we decided to continue south for the next two days going next to Rocky Hock Campground and then all the way to Greenville.
In Greenville we were lucky enough to meet up with another Merrowvista friend, Ally Sauer! Greenville is the home of Petey the Pirate and East Carolina University. We got to see some of campus and have a home cooked meal.
As we left today we learned something else great about Greenville that is in line with our mission. Greenville has been recognized by the Non-Profit KaBoom! For being a part of Playful City USA. Greenville is making moves to make it a priority for children to play!
