Here we are in the great state of Texas! This is the state with big roads, big trucks, big shoulders on the roads (usually), big fields, big farms, big properties, big sky, and big gusts of wind. We are definitely out of the East, and out of the South now too. We are in Texas, on our way out to the West across the USA!
We crossed into Texas yesterday, when we decided to power out 92 miles from Elk City, OK to Pampa, TX. As we move farther west, I sense that the people we cross have a greater belief in our ability to succeed. Hearing three young women say that they are crossing the entire United States on bicycles, without a car, without a refrigerator, and yes, without a gun too, is utterly shocking for a number of people. This is the surprise I like to share. This surprise that yes, we can, we are, and we have already made true progress in bicycling two months coast to coast is an empowering message to share. I love showing that if something seems impossible, it might not be. Biking through a 25 mph headwind? Let's do it. Biking up and over the Appalachian mountains? Yes, sir. Physical activity every day, our own type of pilgrimage? Indeed. Every conversation we have along the way is a fun opportunity for us to learn about the area we pass through and an opportunity for us to share the exciting, crazy voyage we are living out. Kind strangers have shared bananas, granola bars, places to sleep, and friendly honks on the road. I like to think that this trip brings out the good in others and the good in ourselves, showing how unexpected positive moments can come anywhere.
